Dunfermline’s Outwith Festival is a celebration of home grown and out-of-this world music, comedy, film, theatre, art and literature. Launched in September 2017, the inaugural festival attracted big name artists such as Turner-prize nominee and internationally-renowned artist, David Mach. After the sell-out success of 2017, the Festival is bigger and better in 2018. Another day has been added to the programme, which will see over 120 performances in 23 venues from Wednesday 5 September until Sunday 9 September.
The event is founded and organised by Dunfermline Delivers with Fire Station Creative, Avocado Sweet and Write Rammy.
The Dunfermline event has the Edinburgh Fringe to thank for the Festival name. The original idea was to stage a Fife event to help the Fringe celebrate their 70th birthday in 2017. The Edinburgh Fringe started in 1947 and Dunfermline hosted one of the original events at the Abbey. Although keen to help, the Fringe said that, being ‘outwith’ the EH postcode prevented Dunfermline from using the Edinburgh Fringe name.
