An art project based on Café Giacomo, Dunfermline. The café has remained relatively unchanged since it opened in 1958 – still with original booth seating and tables. During 2017, artist Ally Wallace undertook a short residency there – to gather information and record details of his surroundings through drawing and video, as a means of conveying something about the character of the place. The resulting work – drawings, linocuts and a short film – will be shown in the café during Outwith Festival.

Thirteen established FDPW members enthusiastically seized the challenge to showcase the skills of both countries by creating an exhibition of original artwork using five different types of hand-made papers. The results can be seen at an exhibition at DCL&G from September 8 until January 6.

You can’t beat a baddie everyone loves to hate. Join children’s author Juliette Forrest who will help you create some memorable baddies. Drawing inspiration from some infamous wicked characters, we’ll create our very own despicable villains from scratch. Watch out, they’re behind you!

After finishing school, Juliette left Scotland for the bright lights of London where she trained as an art director and worked in the creative departments of advertising agencies, winning awards for her TV, radio, press and poster campaigns. Wanting a life of adventure, she packed her bags and travelled around the world, where she stayed with the Karen people in Thailand, dived the Great Barrier Reef, explored Malaysian jungles, visited the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island in Hong Kong and hared across America by Greyhound Bus. Winning a New Writers Award from the Scottish Book Trust gave Juliette the support she needed to complete her first novel Twister, which was snapped up by Scholastic and published in February 2018. Juliette lives in Glasgow and loves exploring the great outdoors with her rescue dog – even though she has a sneaking suspicion he is the one taking her for a walk.

Outwith Live : Lundin Calling @ Fire Station Creative
Sep 8 @ 1:00 pm – 1:40 pm
Outwith Live : Lundin Calling @ Fire Station Creative

Lundin Calling are a five piece based in the picturesque Fife town of Lundin Links, who begin playing together in 2011 at a monthly jam session for musicians in the local pub.

It became clear early doors there was something very interesting in combining an ageing pub-rock band with lead instrument being the fiddle, and forming a band seemed the logical next step.

Since then Lundin Calling have practiced regularly and gigged sporadically. For the last four they’ve headlined the hugely successful annual New Year’s day shindig at The Crusoe Hotel in Lower Largo. And, alongside Aye Hobos they took to the stage recently in Crossgates in a fundraiser for Maia Mouse Foundation.

With their extensive setlist of well-known rock standards played with just a hint of folk styling, Lundin Calling are a unique band on the Fife circuit.

their unique sound, loosely termed as ‘Goodtime Blues’, into a powerful yet dynamic mix of Blues,

Swing, R & B and Jazz.

Baby Isaac are a melting pot of musical influences which they blend into exciting

and varied sets. Playing a mix of original material and cover versions, the band present their own

take on the emotion of blues whilst breathing new life into the classics of yesteryear.

So, whether you get your kicks from blinding blues guitar work, incredibly dynamic vocals, stunning

harp playing or a swinging rhythm section, Baby Isaac have all of the above – make sure you don’t

miss the opportunity to catch one of the UK’s finest; coming soon to a venue near you!

Excerpt from Blues Matters (British blues magazine) review:

‘This band has everything, great guitar work delivered with class by Derek Welsh, dynamic vocals from Angela Moore with her distinctive smokey, emotive voice & Gary Arnott who also provides a generous dash of blues-harp & a swinging rhythm section courtesy of Dave Welsh & Graeme Smith.‘

Outwith Live : Dropkick Duo @ Fire Station Creative
Sep 8 @ 3:00 pm – 3:40 pm
Outwith Live : Dropkick Duo @ Fire Station Creative

With two very talented writers and singers within their ranks Dropkick are blessed with a rich seam of songs with which to entertain. Stepping out from the band environment to perform as a duo allows Andrew Taylor and Al Shields to showcase, no only the band material and skills gained from countless shows, but also songs written for solo projects.

In June 2107, Dropkick songwriter, frontman and producer, Andrew Taylor, released his first solo album via Rock Indiana Records. The album, ‘From the Outside Looking In’, features 10 new songs written, recorded and performed by Andrew at the band’s rehearsal studio last year. The album is available to be streamed or downloaded via Amazon, Itunes, Google play, Spotify, Apple music and other online retailers and as a CD from Dropkick’s online shop.

Al Shields has fully embraced the Americana genre, writing, recording and touring his country-flavoured solo album ‘Slow Burner’. Upon the album’s release, Scottish arts website Edinburgh Spotlight noted: “With titles like Travelling Man and Had A Little Lovin’, you get the sense Al would be more at home in some dustbowl diner in the mid-west rather than a grand ballroom in the east end of Edinburgh.”.
Releasing his EP ‘Mountains’, in 2016 and Fire On Holy Ground in 2018 Al says that “Johnny Cash was always a big influence for me” he says, “and my Mum loved Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton. That’s really where my sound and songwriting style came from. American music always resonated with me more. The imagery used in American folk and country holds more romanticism for me. Highways and dusty old railroads might seem clichéd at times but that imagery has always appealed to me in songs”.

So any duo outings for Andrew and Al will treat listeners to not some really top notch songs from the canon of Dropkick and solo cuts from both Andrew and Al

Outwith Live : Faramach @ Fire Station Creative
Sep 8 @ 4:00 pm – 4:40 pm
Outwith Live : Faramach @ Fire Station Creative

Faramach the band was “born” in October 2014 when one of the teachers at Woodmill High School felt there was a passion in the school for Celtic Music. The Faramach name itself was suggested by a first year pupil in the school. As part of their first year course they had to do a project on Celtic Music, and part of this was to come up with a name for a Celtic Rock band. From over 200 suggestions “Faramach” was decided as the best (it means Noise Making in Gaelic).

Although they are a young band, Faramach have already developed a strong team ethic. They range in age from 14 to 17 and they rock. While a couple of them have played Celtic style before, the majority hadn’t experienced traditional music before this band.

There has recently been a change of focus in the curriculum towards “Scottishness” and, when coupled with an undeniable wider social awareness of national identity, this created an environment where the Scottish Arts could flourish.

The high standard of natural musicianship at Woodmill has been cultured and developed by the excellent teaching and parental support fed this surge in cultural pride and Faramach was created.

Outwith Live - Phoenix Lane @ Fire Station Creative

July 2007; Colin Watson had written a few ‘tunes’ on Acoustic guitar – just to lay down a recording for posterity.

He persuaded Darryl Bailie and Robert Sclater to play bass guitar and drums and Eddie Wishart to take on the vocal. These four were soon joined by Murdo MacLeod on lead guitar and backing vocal.

The EP was completed and this inevitably focused attention to live performance.

Phoenix Lane played their first gig on October 4th 2008.

From day one Phoenix Lane have penned their own music; a blend of Classic Country Rock and Folk with, at times, a Celtic strand woven through.

Colin is the last of the original line up. He has ensured the continuity of genre and passion for writing emotive and clever songs.

Phoenix Lane have gone from strength to strength, bringing in talented musicians who have taken Phoenix Lane to it’s current melodic plateau!

The current line-up have been performing together now for 7 years or so.

Colin Watson (Acoustic Guitar, Low D Whistle, vocals) Christine Munday  (Violin, Bass Guitar, backing vocal) Maxine Hemmann (Main Vocal, Keyboard), Fergus McNair (Drums / Percussion, Harmonica, Vocal) Wilson Dunlop (Lead Guitar, Vocal)

What started out as four former touring musicians recorning to pass the time during the summer of 2017 has turned into a committed album project that shows no sign of slowing down. Sunstinger recently made their live debut at Liverpool Soundcity.

Outwith Live : AYE HOBOS @ Fire Station Creative

This abomination of a beat combo brings their blood, sweat and grits to the festival. Watch in wonder as they wrestle their instruments to extract a fusion of country and punk. Rise as one as the joy of this ‘Cunk’ music fills your soul. Let the fun begin as Honeybadger, Scotty Boy, Swamp Gator and Beaver lead this harmonious hoedown over the edge. Warning may contain scenes of mild peril.
